The Importance of Good Dental Hygiene

When it comes to maintaining your pet’s health and providing them with extra years of quality living, good dental care is essential. Dental disease is one of the most common health problems affecting dogs and cats. In fact, many vets claim that 85 percent of dogs over the age of 4 suffer from some form of periodontal disease. That’s a lot!

Cats and dogs whose teeth do not receive appropriate dental care frequently develop periodontitis which causes bad breath, loose teeth, sore gums and even cavities. Don’t let bad breath from dental disease affect your relationship with your pet

Eliminate Bad Breath

Bad breath is most often caused by plaque and tartar which can build-up along the gum line if it is not removed by chewing on bones or other gnawing toys. This plaque and tartar build up acts as a breeding ground for odour producing bacteria which can lead to painful tooth and gum issues. Regular teeth cleaning combined with conscientious home dental care will significantly improve your pet’s oral health.

So here are some top tips to help keep your dog’s teeth healthy and clean:

  1. Start teeth cleaning early when you first get your new puppy. If you have an older pet START NOW – It’s never too late!
  2. Clean teeth regularly, preferably daily.
  3. Weekly treatments up to three times a week will show great results! Some dental pastes on the market will require brushing but the VetIQ 2-in-1 Dental Care Range has a variety of options that work effectively without the need for brushing.
  4. Annual dentist visits – book your pet in now for a visit so your weekly home treatments are more effective.

Examine Your Pet’s Mouth Regularly

Check your pet’s mouth weekly for reddened gums, yellow or brown tartar collecting on the teeth, abnormal swellings or growths, loose teeth, excessive drooling, or even bad breath. These are all signs that your pet may have an oral disease and should be addressed by your veterinarian.

The key is to make teeth cleaning a positive event for your pet and so offer plenty of praise!
